fediblock, racism, misogyny

@mhmd
Thr tweets for the record.

I noticed his constant virtue signaling by quoting Angela Davis.
Wouldn't be surprised if she's the only black woman activist he knows about... :blobcatglaredrink:

This is sad. I don't think Aral is acting in bad faith but singling out a random intern for working somewhere as if they were an Eichmann is not okay. I hope and think he's capable of realising that and acting in accordance, apologising.

re: fediblock, racism, misogyny

@cadadr @mhmd
Not a random intern, a black woman.
He displayed his antiblackness before, he can tatoo BLM all over his face, that wouldn't make him less of a whiteness-fueled asshole.

For real, the whole idolizing behavior in the tech field never fails to gross me out.

re: fediblock, racism, misogyny

@iantila @mhmd

He displayed his antiblackness before

That's not something I have witnessed myself, but I've no reason to doubt what you say either. I don't know the person, all I know of him is is a bunch of toots he's written over the last few months. I wasn't following him on any other platform, and nor do I idolise him. Do not judge me like that just because I haven't encountered the relevant posts of the guy.

re: fediblock, racism, misogyny

@cadadr @mhmd
My point is that we know that Aral is a white cis man who's influential in his field. When this type of person fucks up publicly, the level of forgiveness they take advantage of infuriates me.

You said it yourself "it's sad", and still hope he'd apologize like he doesn't realize what he's doing... So yeah, that's the behavior I am talking about.

White techbros in position of power shouldn't be given the benefit of the doubt when they fuck up. That's all I am saying.

re: fediblock, racism, misogyny

@iantila @mhmd Point taken and no disagreements. He was just a mastodon account I was following that tooted about privacy. Didn't know how much following/influence he had or his antiblackness before you and LJ pointed that out. And while I've learned a lot about the global west lately, I'm not from a western country and nor do I live in one, so I don't know all there is to know about culture, racism, etc. therein. He may be aware of what he's doing (and I trust the word of you lot on that), but I didn't know enough to be able to tell nor expect that. All I intended was to communicate support, and I'm sincerely sorry if I failed at doing that, but getting lumped in with 'white techbros idolising someone' does not sit well with me, and it's unfair because I am not part of any of those labels.

re: fediblock, racism, misogyny

@iantila @cadadr @mhmd yeah Aral says all the right things and I wanted to like him, but when it comes down to the wire he's been disgustingly antiblack.

re: fediblock, racism, misogyny

@ljwrites @iantila @mhmd Followed the guy for a while when I was new to mastodon, but his posting was way too aggressive and inflammatory, so soon after unfollowed him. Somewhat recently re-followed because apparently he was posting infrequently but re-un-followed when I read the linked threads. Didn't notice the anti-blackness, guess it was either chance or the kind an outsider like me couldn't easily notice...

fediblock, racism, misogyny

@mhmd cut him off a while ago, never felt better about that decision
